Allergy Diagnosis Options

Testing Your Allergies:

If it seems like you are having constant reactions to the environment, whether through different seasons or all year, you can find out exactly what you are reacting to and what is occurring.  Instead of getting general allergy medications, or waiting until the symptoms pass, you can become pro-active in finding how you are reacting to specific substances through the use of allergy testing and diagnosis.

General physicians and practitioners offer a variety of tests which will give you an answer to finding what you are allergic to and what your body is fine with being around.  Once you know the results to these tests, you can make a conscious decision of where to go and what to do with the various reactions that you have.  The result will be confirmation of what you should be avoiding so that your allergies don't stop you from enjoying your day.

Skin Tests

The most common type of test for allergies is done through the skin.  These are known to be the most effective type of allergy tests, simply because the results are seen faster and they are more accurate than other types of testing.  A skin test will begin with a specific substance being placed directly under the skin through a small prick or puncture.  Typically, the general allergens that most react to will be used, including things such as foods, pollens and other foreign substances in which the patient thinks they may be having reactions to.

The allergens will be placed either on the arm or on the back in order to produce the best results.  After the variety of allergy substances are pricked, the patient will then have to wait for an average of thirty minutes.  Within this time frame, the specific substances in which the patient is allergic to will show up with a reaction on the skin.  This will also be shown with a level of severity, usually ranked from a scale of 1 to 4.  With the smaller reactions of 1, there will only be a slight mark.  With the reaction of 4, the patient may break out in hives or a larger rash.  This will be measured and analyzed for a complete result of how allergic one is to the substance that has been tested.

Blood Tests

A second way to get your allergic reactions known is through blood tests.  In this type of test, the blood is screened from the patient for specific allergic reactions that may occur within the blood.  This is done not only through testing the blood with specific samples, but by measuring the levels of antibodies that are in the blood.

With allergies, the reactions occur because the immune system provides an over abundance of type E antibodies, or molecular proteins.  If there is a larger amount of these in the blood, than it can be concluded that allergic reactions are present among the individual.  Beyond this, the blood can be screened with the patient in order to determine what specific reactions they have.  This will then be measured with the blood sample to see how strong the sensitivity level and reactions from the E antibodies are.

With these two types of tests are also outlets and ways in which individuals can determine their level of allergic reactions as well as what they are allergic to.  The various ways in which this is done, as well as the understanding of the results will allow both doctors and those who suffer from allergies to then be able to cope with the sensitivity and reactions that occur from the environment, allowing for you to keep your allergies under control.
